چکیده

[1] A technique for the estimation of total liquid water content (LWC; the sum of cloud water and rainwater contents) using simultaneous S and Ka band scanning radar observations is proposed and tested using the National Center for Atmospheric Research simultaneous S band and Ka band dual‐polarimetric (S‐PolKa) radar system. The sources of error for this wavelength pair are evaluated, and the methods to mitigate them are discussed. The results are LWC estimates at each radar volume that are equivalent to specifying a reflectivity (Z) – LWC relation constrained by the measured attenuation over 2 km radar ray segments. Because the radars are scanning, the LWC can be mapped out over the spatial volume and temporal evolution of the clouds. The method produces reasonable results that qualitatively compare well to in situ aircraft observations.

Water vapor and liquid water estimates using simultaneous S and Ka band radar measurements

Using simultaneous S and Ka band observations it is possible to retrieve a path integrated value of the water vapor content as well as cloud liquid water content values using the atmospheric and liquid water attenuation properties at the two frequencies. Recently the NCAR S-band dual polarimetric (S-Pol) radar has been upgraded to include simultaneous Ka-band radar measurements (Farquharson et ...

Water vapor estimates using simultaneous dual‐wavelength radar observations

[1] A technique for the estimation of humidity in the lower troposphere using simultaneous dual‐wavelength radar observations is proposed and tested. The method compares the reflectivity from clouds and precipitation of a non‐attenuated wavelength (S‐band, 10 cm) and an attenuated wavelength (Ka‐band, 8 mm) to compute the clear‐air gaseous attenuation at the attenuated wavelength. These estimat...

6a.5 Extraction of Cloud Parameters Using Multipeak Analysis of Cloud Radar Data

The Ka-band radars are particularly suited for cloud droplets and small rain drop regime measurements, by their capability to penetrate through rainand snow-falls and to detect small hydrometeors. Traditionally three moments of Doppler spectra are used as basis to retrieve microphysical cloud parameters, e. g. characteristic particle size (Gossard, 1997), liquid water content (Liao, 1994) and t...

Continental Stratus Clouds: A Case Study Using Coordinated Remote Sensing and Aircraft Measurements

A continental stratus cloud layer was studied by advanced ground-based remote sensing instruments and aircraft probes on 30 April 1994 from the Cloud and Radiation Testbed site in north-central Oklahoma. The boundary layer structure clearly resembled that of a cloud-topped mixed layer, and the cloud content is shown to be near adiabatic up to the cloud-top entrainment zone. A cloud retrieval al...

Theory and Observations Between Ka-Band and W-Band to Explain Scattering Differences from Insects

Ground based Ka-band (33 GHz) cloud radar measurements collected at the Southern Great Plains (SGP) Cloud and Radiation Testbed (CART) site show that liquid cloud measurements are often contaminated by insect echoes during warm weather. Depolarization is one method of identifying and filtering insects from radar data. However, this technique often fails because the high number density of insect...
